"Do you remember how the land around the cottage looked when I first asked you to meet with us? There was a lot of dirt, a considerable amount of rock and far too many scraggy juniper bushes. I was in despair that it would ever be as I had hoped; that any of the flowers and herbs which I adore would be able to thrive in such an unwelcoming area.
You turned all of that into my sanctuary. Even in the winter I enjoy looking out to see the cedars covered with snow. That was a brilliant idea as they appear to be distasteful to deer and give us additional privacy on one side of the property. I love looking at the garden beds and their various humps and bumps and knowing that when spring arrives so will my irises, peonies, both kinds of hydrangea and my wonderful flowering weigela bushes covered in pink blossoms lining the pathway. I love walking through the garden with my coffee on a bright spring morning and smelling the lilac and the mock orange. The lavender and russian sage give such beautiful colour all summer.
The beauty of all of this is that you’ve planted not only what is pleasing to all the senses but what you know from experience will tolerate the climate here on Lake Joseph and in fact will flourish.
You created wonderful pathways out of an area that was not suitable for walking or for children playing. Now my grandchildren can enjoy the grass and drive their various bikes and trikes down the pathways to the lake.
I can’t say enough about your wonderful crew and what a terrific job they do each year in cleaning up and maintaining the garden. I know that when I arrive each weekend the garden will be at its best and I don’t have to start weeding before the arrival of our guests.
As I’ve said many times, I wish you worked in Toronto. Larry, I truly can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done to make my Hamer Bay cottage garden everything I hoped it could be. You worked a miracle."
